Saints Catholic College Indigenous Bursary Program

Bursary Value: 5 annually x 100% of Residential Contract Fees up to the value of Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category)

Date to be presented: Bishop’s Dinner (Usually held in March each year)

Presented in the spirit of the Saints Catholic College Mission “To deliver affordable College accommodation, pastoral care and a supportive academic environment for students, within a Catholic culture” to five residents who do not receive full Abstudy accommodation support payments and whose applications present worthy via the Indigenous Education Research Centre & Saints Catholic College. 

Items of Qualification:

  • Applicants must apply via the Indigenous Education research Centre at James Cook University, Townsville, Bebegu Yumba Campus. Phone (07) 4781 4676. Email: [email protected].
  • Applicant must legally identify as Indigenous Australian
  • Applicant must have a current Saints Catholic College Residential Contract at the time of presentation.

Selection Process:

  • This bursary will be rated on academic, character and socio-economic merit and other aspects such as remoteness and access to tertiary education. All initial selections are made by the Indigenous Education Research Centre with final approval by Saints Catholic College. As such all applications must go through the IERC. Phone (07) 4781 4676. Validity & Continuance:

  • The applicant must remain enrolled at James Cook University to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must remain a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average of a possible 7.0 to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not receive a "show cause" request by the College based on behaviour unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • This Bursary will be applied on a fortnightly basis to the successful applicants residential contract fees for the duration of its validity. 
  • Should the applicant receive Abstudy during their enrollment the bursary will be reduced to cover the gap between the amount received and the maximum accommodation fees covered by the bursary.

Saints Catholic College Mission Bursary

Bursary Value: 1 x 100% of Residential Contract Fees up to the value of Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category)

Deadline for Application: No Application is required as ALL first year residents are automatically entered. 

Date to be presented: Bishop’s Dinner (Usually held in March each year)

Presented in the spirit of the Saints Catholic College Mission “To deliver affordable College accommodation, pastoral care and a supportive academic environment for students, within a Catholic culture” to one resident drawn from all "James Cook University First Year" Residents of Saints Catholic College.

Items of Qualification:

  • All JCU first year residents at Saints Catholic College are eligible for this Bursary and no application is required.
  • Applicant must have a current Saints Catholic College Residential Contract at the time of presentation.

Selection Process:

  • This bursary will be a random selection from the pool of valid applications (as determined by the Saints Catholic College management team). Should the selected applicant already have received another bursary of greater or equal value, they will be ineligible for this bursary and a redraw will occur.

Validity & Continuance:

  • The applicant must remain enrolled at James Cook University to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must remain a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average of a possible 7.0 to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not receive a "show cause" request by the College based on behaviour unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • This Bursary will be applied on a fortnightly basis to the successful applicants residential contract fees for the duration of its validity. 

St Raphael Bursary

Bursary Value: 1 bursary x 50% of the Annual Residential Contract Fees up to the value of a Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category).

Deadline for Application: January 31st of each residential year 

Date to be Presented: Bishop’s Dinner (usually held in March each year)

Presented in the spirit and memory of St Raphael to the successful applicant who is a resident of St Raphael’s (Merrick or Grail Wing) who successfully conveys that they have a strong moral compass, a noble character, and can present a socio-economic hardship, obstacle or other relevant financial or social difficulty that hinders their desire to achieve a tertiary degree at JCU.

These bursaries are open to all residents of Saints Catholic College who have a current Residential Contract with Saints Catholic College at the time of presentation who have been allocated a room in St Raphael's. Note: If you are to be a new resident at Saints you will likely not have an allocation of residency wing at the time of your application. As such please only submit a single application for both the St Raphael's & St Paul's Bursaries by ticking the appropriate box on the application form.

Essential Items of Qualification:

  • Applicant must be enrolled at James Cook University Townsville at the time of presentation.
  • Applicant or applicants’ legal guardian/s eligibility for Family Tax Benefit B and/or be able to provide any other documentation to support a socioeconomic hardship, obstacle or other relevant financial or social difficulty factor/s.
  • Minimum of two character references from community figures or representatives, e.g. Local, State or Federal members, religious representatives of any recognised religion or denomination, leaders or spokespersons for community focused organisations or charities, school principal or other relevant school representative, a person of respected standing in their community etc.

Items for Consideration:

  • Applicants ID home address (domestic or international) is one of a lower socioeconomic standing. For Australia refer - IRSD Interactive Map
  • A maximum of 500 words from a Personal Referee detailing how the applicant presents a strong moral compass and noble character and why they believe you would be a worthy recipient of this Bursary (Parent, Guardian, Relative, Teacher etc).
  • A maximum of 500 words from the applicant explaining why they believe they would be a worthy recipient and how they believe they could demonstrate this at Saints.

Selection Process:

  • Both bursaries will be based upon assessment by the Saints Catholic College management team.
  • Should the selected applicant already have received another bursary of greater or equal value, they will be ineligible for this bursary and a reallocation will occur.

  • The applicant must maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average of a possible 7.0 to continue to receive this Bursary.

St Paul Bursary

Bursary Value: 1 bursary x 50% of the Annual Residential Contract Fees up to the value of a Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category).

Deadline for Application: January 31st of each residential year 

Date to be Presented: Bishop’s Dinner (usually held in March each year)

Presented in the spirit and memory of St Paul to the successful applicant who is a resident of St Paul's (Kneipp or O'Leary Wing) who successfully conveys that they have a strong moral compass, a noble character, and can present a socioeconomic hardship, obstacle or other relevant financial or social difficulty that hinders their desire to achieve a tertiary degree at JCU.

These bursaries are open to all residents of Saints Catholic College who have a current Residential Contract with Saints Catholic College at the time of presentation who have been allocated a room in St Paul's. Note: If you are to be a new resident at Saints you will likely not have an allocation of residency wing at the time of your application. As such please only submit a single application for both the St Raphael & St Paul Bursaries by ticking the appropriate box on the application form.

Bishops Community Champion Bursary

Bursary Value: 1 x 50% of the Annual Residential Contract Fees up to the value of a Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category).

Deadline for Application: January 31st of each residential year 

Date to be Presented: Bishop’s Dinner (usually held in March each year)

Presented to the successful applicant whose actions within their community speaks to their ethical and moral character and desire to assist the common good.

These bursaries are open to all residents of Saints Catholic College who have a current Residential Contract with Saints Catholic College at the time of presentation. This includes current and new residents of Saints Catholic College.

Essential Items of Qualification:

  • Applicant must be enrolled at James Cook University Townsville at the time of presentation.
  • Applicant is able to provide documentation to show activity in community focused activities or volunteer work.
  • Minimum of three character references from community figures or representatives, e.g. Local, State or Federal members, religious representatives of any recognised religion or denomination, leaders or spokespersons for community focused organisations or charities, school principal or other relevant school representative, a person of respected standing in their community etc.

Items for Consideration:

  • Any form of printed materials, digital links or reports, news stories or other evidence that shows activity in community focused activities, clubs, organisations, assistance to others, support toward the disadvantaged, social work etc.
  • A maximum of 1000 words from the applicant detailing how they present as a person with a strong moral compass, noble character and possess a belief in the betterment of mankind through community involvement and why they believe they would be a worthy recipient of this Bursary.
  • A statutory declaration from the applicant that they are at the time of application for this bursary not possessing a criminal record of any kind.

Selection Process:

  • This bursary will be based upon assessment by the Most Reverend Bishop of Townsville and the CEO of Saints Catholic College.

Validity & Continuance:

  • The applicant must remain enrolled at James Cook University to continue to receive this Bursary..
  • The applicant must maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average of a possible 7.0 to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not receive a "show cause" request by the College based on behaviour unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not been seen in the community (public realm) to be acting in such a way unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • This Bursary will be applied on a fortnightly basis to the successful applicants residential contract fees for the duration of its validity. 

Catholic Youth Ambassador Bursary

Bursary Value: 2 x 50% of the Annual Residential Contract Fees up to the value of a Standard Non-Air Conditioned room. (residents can upgrade and pay the difference of a higher room category).

Deadline for Application: January 31st of each residential year 

Date to be Presented: Bishop’s Dinner (usually held in March each year)

Presented to the individual who will act as the Saints Catholic College Youth Ambassador including attendance at and participation in selected activities as set by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Townsville. 

This Bursary is open to all residents of Saints Catholic College who have a current Residential Contract with Saints Catholic College at the time of presentation. 

Essential Items of Qualification:

  • Applicant must be enrolled at James Cook University Townsville at the time of presentation.
  • Applicant must be an active member of their Catholic Church in their home region and/or the Diocese of Townsville. A letter of reference from an official church representative will need to be provided.

Items for Consideration:

  • Any form of printed materials, digital links or reports, news stories or other evidence that shows activity in their local Catholic Church or Diocese of Townsville community.
  • Character references from community figures or representatives, e.g. Local, State or Federal members, Catholic Church members, leaders or spokespersons for community focused organisations or charities, school principal or other relevant school representative, a person of respected standing in their community etc.
  • A Maximum of 1000 words from the applicant detailing how they are passionate about youth ministry and making the church more youth focused and why they believe they would be a worthy recipient of this Bursary.

Selection Process:

  • This bursary will be based upon assessment by the Most Reverend Bishop of Townsville and the CEO of Saints Catholic College.

Validity & Continuance:

  • The applicant must remain enrolled at James Cook University to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average of a possible 7.0 to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not receive a "show cause" request by the College based on behaviour unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must not been seen in the community (public realm) to be acting in such a way unbecoming of a resident of Saints Catholic College to continue to receive this Bursary.
  • The applicant must fulfill the requirements of the Youth Ambassador and attend all activities and events as set by the Diocese (where these activities and events do not conflict with their academic exam or academic assessment requirements).
  • This Bursary will be applied on a fortnightly basis to the successful applicants residential contract fees for the duration of its validity. 

Gloria Lazzarini Prize (Bursary)

The Gloria Lazzarini Prize (Bursary) is intended to be a memorial to honour the memory of Gloria Lazzarini former Deputy Principal of St Raphael’s College, who died on 1st August 2015. Gloria placed a high value on formal education but a greater value on engaging the community in which she lived and the issues of the day. She was a great advocate for social justice and was passionate about politics and current affairs. Gloria loved literature, especially poetry and was an enthusiastic sportswoman and sports follower.

Bursary Value: $5000.

Date to be presented: Bishops Dinner (Usually held in March each year).

Presented to one successful female application who has successfully completed their second year of undergraduate study at James Cook University and have been in residence at Saints Catholic College for two years.

Items of Consideration:

  • Evidence of academic achievement for the past two years of study at JCU.
  • Curriculum Vitae (no more than two pages) highlighting social justice projects, community initiatives and sporting achievements.
  • Record of behaviour as a moral and respectful member of the Saints Catholic College community.

Selection Process:

  • This bursary will be based upon assessment by the Most Reverend Bishop of Townsville and the CEO of Saints Catholic College.

Validity & Continuance:

  • The prize is awarded in the form of a bank cheque to the full amount at the time of presentation.
